It should be about twice the size of your computer storage. You should perform regular updates of this backup and ideally use Safety Net to keep copies of files deleted/altered on your computer. If you have already upgraded to the latest macOS then the macOS installer will be gone as it erases itself after the upgrade is complete. This is done with a third party app like Instal Disk Creator and is a simple process. To make one you will need Apple's macOS installer application downloaded when you upgrade the system. A bootable macOS installer can be made on a USB Thumb Drive of about 15GB or above.
